Free dental care for under-26s in Scotland

Scotland's most generous dental policy: anyone under 26 registered with an NHS dental practice in Scotland receives entirely free NHS dental care, including both examinations and all treatment. This is significantly more generous than England's provision.

To benefit, you must be registered with an NHS dental practice in Scotland. If you are new to Scotland, registering with an NHS practice gives you access to this entitlement from the date of registration.

Note: this applies to under-26s. From the 26th birthday, standard adult charges apply (80% of package value, capped at £384), unless otherwise exempt.

Frequently asked questions

Is NHS dentistry free in Scotland?
In Scotland, NHS dental examinations are free for everyone registered with an NHS dentist. Treatment is not entirely free for most adults: patients pay 80% of the treatment cost, capped at £384 per course. Under-26s in Scotland receive both examinations and treatment completely free of charge.
What is the £384 cap in Scottish NHS dentistry?
In Scotland, patients pay 80% of the NHS treatment package value, but this contribution is capped at £384 per course of treatment. If your treatment package costs £500, you would pay 80% which is £400 - but the cap means you pay only £384. For lower-value packages, you pay 80% of the actual package value.
Are dental examinations free for everyone in Scotland?
Yes. NHS dental examinations are free for everyone in Scotland who is registered with an NHS dental practice. This is different from England, where everyone pays £27.90 for a Band 1 check-up (unless exempt). Scotland's free examination policy means the check-up itself never costs anything.
Who gets completely free NHS dental treatment in Scotland?
The following groups receive entirely free NHS dental treatment in Scotland: all under-26s, under-18s, under-19s in qualifying education, pregnant women and new mothers, people on qualifying benefits (Income Support, Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, qualifying Universal Credit), HC2 certificate holders. Everyone receives free examinations.
How do I find an NHS dentist in Scotland?
Use NHS Inform Scotland (nhsinform.scot) to find NHS dental practices in your area. If practices are not accepting new patients, contact your local NHS board or NHS 24 (111). Scotland also has a Public Dental Service providing safety-net care for people unable to register with a general dental practice.
What is the Public Dental Service in Scotland?
The Public Dental Service (PDS) in Scotland provides NHS dental care for priority groups who are unable to access a general dental practice, including people with special care needs, housebound patients, and in some areas, patients who cannot find a regular NHS dentist. Contact your local NHS board to enquire about PDS access.
